In 2023, the early school dropout rate across the European Union decreased to 9.5%, continuing a decade-long decline from 11.8% in 2013. However, Romania recorded the highest rate of early school leaving in the EU at 16.6%, marking an increase from 15.6% in 2022. This is the highest level since 2018. The data indicates that Romania is significantly above the EU's target of reducing early school leaving to below 9% by 2030
