The social responsibility platform of the Dacia brand launched a comprehensive study that revealed that a quarter of respondents do not feel safe as pedestrians in their city of residence.
Key findings of the study:
Nearly 60% of respondents walk for more than 30 minutes daily.
Only 12% of those who walk feel safe as pedestrians in their city.
Over 60% of respondents observed drivers violating traffic rules.
Half of the respondents also noticed negligent pedestrian behavior, such as crossing the street despite a red or yellow light.
Jaywalking is the most frequent negative pedestrian behavior (67.7%).
The main reasons why pedestrians jaywalk are:
An empty street (over 70% of cases)
Long distance to the crosswalk (47.5%)
Time pressure (29%)
80.4% of respondents believe pedestrian inattention is the main cause of traffic accidents.
36.3% of respondents believe that risk awareness campaigns are effective and would motivate them to follow the rules more strictly.
Conclusion
The Dacia study highlights a number of issues related to pedestrian safety in Romania. It is important for both pedestrians and drivers to be aware of the risks they face and to follow traffic regulations. The "First Step Counts" campaign is a significant step towards improving pedestrian safety in Romania.
