The foodservice industry in Romania grew by 16% last year, in 2023, reaching a total value of EUR 6.31 billion, and the Food Delivery market represents a quarter (25%) of HoReCa, according to a press release sent on Monday, StartupCafe.ro.
The average order in HoReCa has a value of 56.8 lei, according to the Hospitality Culture Research study, carried out in partnership with Tazz.
Romanians order, on average, 3.3 times a month, the main orders being chicken soup for the first course (31%), meat with a side dish for the main course (41%) and donuts for dessert (42%).
"In 2023 we could observe a slight increase in the foodservice industry. However, Romanians have not started to go out to restaurants more often and do not order food from supermarket gastro rayons or fast-food more often, so the market growth is due, first and foremost, to inflation. When it comes to choosing a new restaurant, the main source of information is represented by friends and their recommendations. We therefore note the major importance of the experience that Romanians have in HoReCa locations, not only in terms of their loyalty, but also in attracting new customers," says Florin Maxim, founder of the Hospitality Culture Institute.
As for delivery services, 8 out of 10 respondents said they use them to order cooked food, with an average usage frequency of 4.4 times/month. At the same time, the food delivery market (Food Delivery) has a market share of 25%, the second largest after restaurant consumption (26%).
"The Food Delivery market is already a solid one and complements restaurant consumption and other sources of cooked food purchases. We are increasingly seeing that Romanians discover new restaurants and dishes through delivery applications, which they then test offline as well, and the process works in both directions," said Alin Şerban, CEO of Tazz.
Key Takeaways:
The foodservice industry in Romania is growing, driven by inflation and the convenience of food delivery.
The most popular food delivery orders are chicken soup, meat with a side dish, and donuts.
Romanians rely on friends and recommendations when choosing new restaurants.
Food delivery apps are helping Romanians discover new restaurants and dishes.
Overall, the study shows that food delivery is becoming an increasingly popular way for Romanians to eat. This is likely due to a number of factors, including the convenience of having food delivered to your door, the wide variety of restaurants available on delivery apps, and the competitive prices. As the food delivery market continues to grow, it is likely to have a significant impact on the Romanian restaurant industry.
