Study of the Day: Romanians & Work. Data on discrimination and inclusion

Findings:

  • Three out of four Romanians have observed discriminatory situations in the workplace in the past year.

  • Common forms of discrimination include favoritism in hiring, wage discrimination, lack of response to complaints, and discriminatory comments or jokes.

  • There is a significant level of awareness of diversity and inclusion among employees, with many associating diversity with the presence of people from various social categories.

  • Employees in management positions are more likely to adopt inclusive behaviors compared to those in execution roles.

  • The level of education influences the likelihood of adopting integration behaviors and feeling comfortable in the workplace.

  • Data shows that the higher the level of education among members of Generation Z, the more likely they are to adopt integration behaviors and feel comfortable in the workplace.

  • While only a minority of Generation Z members with lower levels of education feel comfortable discussing their cultural background, opinions, and experiences in a team setting, this comfort level increases significantly among those with higher education levels.

Conclusions:

  • Discrimination in the workplace remains a prevalent issue in Romania, with various forms of discrimination impacting employees.

  • Despite challenges, there is progress in raising awareness and promoting diversity and inclusion, as evidenced by the significant level of awareness among employees.

  • Managers play a crucial role in fostering inclusive work environments, but there is still work to be done to ensure all employees feel valued and included.

Implications:

  • Employers need to recognize and address the prevalence of discrimination by implementing policies and practices that promote diversity and inclusion.

  • Government agencies and policymakers should enact and enforce anti-discrimination laws and support initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion.

  • Employees should be aware of their rights and responsibilities regarding discrimination and advocate for change within their organizations.

  • Society as a whole should work towards creating a more equitable and just society by promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Overall, addressing workplace discrimination requires a collaborative effort involving employers, government agencies, employees, and society to create inclusive work environments where all individuals feel valued and respected.
